Please understand that we know not all men are rapists or dangerous but all men have the potential to be. Please understand that we don’t want to be afraid, but we have to be for our own safety.
We don’t want to assume that our safety is in question all the time but the stakes for not taking precautions to protect ourselves are high.
Often when something does happen because we let our guards down or assume we are safe, we will be the ones who are blamed.
We’ve been followed, we’ve been harassed, we’ve been touched. We shouldn’t have to run away, we shouldn’t have to take the long way home, we shouldn’t have to fear everyone. But we do.
If we cross the street to avoid passing by you, it’s not personal. If we walk faster to keep the distance between us comfortable, it’s not personal.
We’re protecting ourselves because we have to, because no one else will.
If we avoid eye contact it’s because we don’t want to show interest, because we’ve been told we’re not allowed to change our mind.
Rejection is hard, but women and girls are getting killed for saying no. Remind me how hard rejection is. Women don’t want the world, we just want to feel safe in it.
