Richard cared about his friends. They meant everything to him and he tried to be a good one as well. Especially to Sam. She waltzed in his life in a winter day and never left.

They became close, laughed, talked a lot, shared interests, music, silly moments and more. She also had a secret.

But he was blind and couldn't see.

She had always been a wonderful person. Sometimes Richard vented to her, when he felt like exploding and wanted to talk to someone he trusted. Sam listened and tried her best to help.

He was thankful for that and words stumbled in the attempt to express it. Sam had something to say too and her voice used to leave every time.

Richard never noticed the look in her eyes when that happened.

But he was blind and couldn't see.

Sam brought a glimpse of colour whenever she talked. Her face was bright when someone mentioned the things she was passionate about. Richard liked to listen to her, especially when she sang.

He was lucky to have such a friend.

But he was blind and couldn't see.

Richard suddenly fell in love and he was very happy. He wanted Sam to know and watched her extinguish after each syllable. She wasn't the one he was in love with.

The first time he broke a heart it shouldn't have been his friend's.

The girl simply stood there, numb and hollow, as the pain filled her and spread into her chest, clinging to the ribs, stabbing her heart, its coils aiming for the throat.

She felt like crying but she had no strength left. Richard didn't know what to do or say, anything would sound fake. He couldn't change his feelings for Sam.

He couldn't build lies, nor illusions for her. He watched her fade and shatter in front of his eyes, wishing he could help somehow. It was too late for that.

Because Sam had loved Richard.

But he was blind and couldn't see.
