For me, one of the most beautiful things is reading a poem for the first time and either not understanding it at all (Hughes) or understanding it as banal (Heaney). Then, after a few minutes (or hours) of analysis, when you understand more of the poem and all of it strikes you - that's one of the best feelings in the world.

Analysing vs Reading Criticism - which do you prefer?

For me, one of the most beautiful things is reading a poem for the first time and either not understanding it at all (Hughes) or understanding it as banal (Heaney).

Then, after a few minutes (or hours) of analysis, when you understand more of the poem and all of it strikes you - that's one of the best feelings in the world.

However, it is also interesting for me to *read* other's peoples analyses of poems; even those I don't know - even though not quite as much as the former method,

it is what I sometimes do when not enough energy is left to "do it myself". What about you?
