Written in November 2018, after a relative’s cancer had progressed. On the surface, this speaks of substance dependency or addiction, but in reality, it was written to cope with the dying process and grief.

Surface 🌢 Poison

Surface 🌢 Poison Disclaimer: This series' aim is not to romanticize mental health issues or gain sympathy, but to bring more awareness to the subject.

Surface 🌢 Poison Disclaimer: Furthermore, it's an attempt to encourage others to express their emotions through writing.

Surface 🌢 Poison

Elixir of the haunted night,

Elixir of the haunted night, this liquid in my blood.

'Tis seeping through my skin and bones,

'Tis seeping through my skin and bones, like water molding mud.

Oh heavy sleep it brings to me,

Oh heavy sleep it brings to me, this tonic for the pain.

Creating sweet illusions that

Creating sweet illusions that conceal the cruel rain.

Ambrosia of the ghostly realm,

Ambrosia of the ghostly realm, alike a spider's web,

do trap me in your silken spools

do trap me in your silken spools and weave my sacred bed.

My sweet surrender, great escape,

My sweet surrender, great escape, oasis of my soul,

within your hands I leave my life

within your hands I leave my life to wait for morning's call.

END Thank you for reading! The 'Surface' series will continue throughout October. Afterwards, 'Tales Retold' will return. 🌢 Ann Sepino (annsepino.mystrikingly.com)
