Written in October 2020, on the tenth anniversary of my recovery from nail biting. I was a nail and lip biter for nine years, a habit formed in response to stress and anxiety.

Surface šŸŒ¢ Bite

Surface šŸŒ¢ Bite Disclaimer: This series' aim is not to romanticize mental health issues or gain sympathy, but to bring more awareness to the subject.

Surface šŸŒ¢ Bite Disclaimer: Furthermore, it's an attempt to encourage others to express their emotions through writing.

Surface šŸŒ¢ Bite

My hands are empty,

My hands are empty, my fingers are cold,

and so I start to bite.

My bones are prone to shaking,

My bones are prone to shaking, shaking,

My bones are prone to shaking, shaking, shaking,

and so I have to bite.

Hungry,

Hungry, always hungry,

Hungry, always hungry, always seeking the unseen,

so I start to bite.

Hurting,

Hurting, always hurting,

Hurting, always hurting, always hiding something painful,

so I have to bite.

I am angry,

I am angry, but you mustn't know.

I start to bite.

My tears are close to falling,

My tears are close to falling, falling,

My tears are close to falling, falling, falling.

I have to bite.

Nervous,

Nervous, always nervous,

Nervous, always nervous, always thinking something's wrong.

Start to bite.

Happy,

Happy, never happy,

Happy, never happy, never finding lasting peace.

Have to bite.

My fingers are cold,

My fingers are cold, my nails are short.

Bite.

Start.

Bite.

END Anxiety in extreme doses/duration is very uncomfortable and detrimental. It can manifest in different ways, like what is depicted in this poem. Thank you for reading! šŸŒ¢ Ann Sepino (annsepino.mystrikingly.com)
