this is *not* about covid.

My Mask

My mask I wear

Upon my flesh;

The pieces of myself I hide

Behind

My mask of shame.

The truth is I hate,

The mask I bear

For it is too heavy and weighing,

On myself that I know

My mask gives me burn marks,

Where my identity used to show

Obscured and disguised

Until it's all that I know.

My mask remains on,

Though I know it's there,

Pieces crumble off

And show what has always been there;

Soon, I hope

The mask will fall off

And my wounds will heal

And then,

I will be me.

Autistic and proud.
