Author's note: This chapter is probably not the best, but that's okay because the other chapters will hopefully be better because I'm not to good at this first chapter thing.
Strands of light shone through the cracks in the chunks of fallen concrete, a middle aged man held a young girl in his arms. The man comforted the girl and motioned for her to be quiet as the light suddenly stopped shining over the spot they sat. They almost no sound until the thing started tapping its claws on the mangled concrete blocks.
The space that surrounded them filled with the echoes of the tapping of bone against rock causing the girl to become distressed. The man tried to stop her whimpering before the creature found them so he stood up to get away just in time as the creature jammed it arm through the stone causing it to collapse.
The man Threw himself forward just beyond the space that was now taken up by rocks. The rock covered the doorway sized opening only leaving about a foot to see out, but that was all he needed to get a quick glimpse at the thing. It was grey with the purple veins shared by every one of those creatures, but this one was new.
The didn't wait for it to start approaching him, he lifted himself and the girl up and sprinted for the other end of the room which looked like it may have been part of a mall at one point. He didn't have time to look back when the creature slammed into him. The thing met his eyes and stepped over him reaching for the girl.
The man slammed his fists against the creatures leg trying to get it away but it didn't seem to have any affect. The creature grabbed the girls arm and before anything happened it was hit with something that created an explosion of smoke and knocked it back. The man grabbed the girl and picked her up and before he could run someone grabbed onto him dragging him with them.
