Function as a Heart

I used to think my heart was a terracotta pot

that, once dropped, could be glued back together

the cracks barely noticeable after a layer of paint

Still able to function as a pot

Now I don't think it's a pot at all

but instead a clock

once full with cogs and gears and hands

all spinning and clicking against itself

to keep the time

I didn't just give you my time

but also my only way of keeping it

You took and now misplaced

the cogs and gears I gave you

the pieces to move me forward

make it function as a clock

I can't just buy new parts online

can't fill the misplaced pieces with glue or paint

but must cut new ones

out of the steely silence you left me in

of the absence of ticks and tocks
