an astronaut's dying wish.

Infinite

by amaranthine

I've been alone for a while now.

It's always been the same.

I would open my eyes, in naïve hope that everything was a dream that I could escape.

But every time I would be greeted by the endless darkness with no exit.

I've been here for as long as I can remember.

And with each passing day, I lose part of myself.

I would do anything to leave. To return to my family, to my friends, to my loved ones.

But I can't do anything but drift aimlessly, trying to stop the tears falling down my face.

I don't know why I'm still hoping for a way out.

I'm far away from Earth, and my cries of help reach nobody but myself.

I've been alone for a while now.

My oxygen supply is running out.

Before I take my last breath, I want to say how beautiful the stars are in this galaxy.

It's as if they're beckoning to me. Pleading for me to hold on.

Maybe in a different life, in a different universe, I can see them again.

And maybe, in that life, I will hold on.
