As Monette woke up, she found herself in a barn. She slowly looked around, realizing she didn't know where she was. She opened the door and peaked out.
She remembered the bar from last night, but nothing else. Perhaps she passed out drunk here. She walked out into the woods right outside. She realized she was in the middle of nowhere.
She reached for her head, but saw something on her arm instead. It was the word "pig" carved into her arm. She knew she wasn't the skinniest, but this was unbelievable.
She stared at it for a minute with disbelief. Just then, she found footprints on the ground. Boots. Small. Must be a woman's. She followed them, desperately looking for answers.
She followed them until she saw someone walking in the woods. She couldn't make out the dark figure, but she followed it. Once she came close to it, she yelled out for help. "Hey!" she cried.
"Help, please!" The figure turned around and watched her as she ran towards it. As she came closer, she saw it was a man. Tall with short, dark brown hair.
She ran up to him and stared into his eyes. He seemed confused. He looked at her arm and read "pig" under his breath. She looked at his arm and found the word "swineherd.
" "Swineherd?" she asked. He looked at his arm and sighed. "It means.." He said, thinking deeply. He continued "A person in charge of feeding and caring for pigs." She nodded.
"This must be a joke. I mean, where are the others?" They looked around. "How did you find me?" He asked. "The boots." "What boots?" she paused and said "Your..
boots?" He looked at his feet and so did she. They weren't boots. She found the footprints again and started following them, with the swineherd following. "What's your name?" She asked.
"Elliot." "I'm Monette." "That's a pretty name." "You have no idea how many times I hear that in a day." "Oh, sorry." "No, it's fine. Let's just find out where these footprints lead."
They finally arrived in a small town. Filled with farms and lakes. It was beautiful, besides it being abandoned and grey.
She walked into a small tavern and said, looking around, "Hello?" Elliot shut the door quickly but quietly. "Put your hands up!" A woman yelled from behind them.
The sound of a gun clicking was in Monette's ear. She turned around with her hands in the air. A woman was pointing a gun directly at her.
"Who are you?" The woman asked, moving her gun from Monette to Elliot. "Um.. I'm Monette and that's Elliot." "Where did you come from?" "The barn" "What are you?" The woman asked quickly.
"What are you?!" She repeated, yelling. "I don't know what you mean." Monette replied, calmly. The woman looked around and said "I mean what's on your arm." "Pig." Monette said, upset.
"Swineherd." Said Elliot. "I'm Emma. I'm 'sheep.'" Emma paused. "This is Paige. She's 'chicken.'" She pointed to a small girl walking out from behind the bar. "It's a bit insulting."
Paige said. She paused for a second and then pointed to the stairwell. "That's Jacob." A teen boy walked downstairs slowly. Monette saw his hearing aid and signed "Hello, Jacob. I'm Monette.
Do you know what's going on here?" He watched without blinking and signed back "Wolf will kill us." Monette back up into Elliot.
He turned her around and said "What's wrong?" She whispered "'Wolf will kill us.'" Emma looked to Jacob and signed him something. Paige hugged him. Monette began to cry.
Emma led them upstairs to the beds and told them to get some sleep. It was already nighttime and Monette could hear a wolf howling outside. She lay down in a bed and tried to sleep.
When she awoke, Emma was standing at the edge of her bed. Monette gasped and gripped the bed as she saw the horrifying blood spilling from Emma's mouth and stomach.
"Care for them." Emma whispered, just before falling to the ground. Monette screamed.
