"first_page_text": "Prologue\n \nThe snow was white and powdery; it felt soft underfoot as though it was a giant blanket of fluffy wool. It stretched out as far as the eye could see. As it touched the horizon it fazed into the dark grey clouds that filled the sky, covering it like a dome. The sun was nowhere to be seen, hidden behind the mass of clouds, its light stilling impacting the brightness of the world. Yes, the sun whose rays could only be dulled. The sun wasn’t invisible, it was needed and never second best. However, not even the sun could hold back the cold. The wind nipped those who dared to stray out into the freezing night. \nStacy looked behind him, the trail of blood that he had left was fresh and despite the greyness of the clouds, he doubted that the snow would come soon enough to cover his tracks. In his thirty years of life, he had always been invisible. It was probably the reason he was still alive right now. He sighed, surely this was far enough. It couldn’t find him here. It would have lost his scent as soon as he had plunged into the black icy waters of the town’s lake. \nStacy began to limp towards the nearest tree, holding his mulled arm close to his side while dragging his right foot behind him. How could this have happened? The town he had lived in had always been peaceful, small, unnoticed just like him. Stacy continued to drag himself on until he finally reached the nearest tree and gently lowered himself down groaning. When he had sat down with his back against the tree he closed his eyes. Images flashed through his mind. The screams, the weeping, the river of scarlet blood, the mangled bodies. His eyes flew open and there it stood in all of its monstrous glory. Darkness and death seeping out of it in a black smoke. Stacy stared up at the monster and the monster stared back at him. Stacy’s lip began to quiver but he remained and held his composure. The more he looked, the more the darkness took shape. A woman formed and stared at her, her horns were jet black and her hair was a fair blond. She was beautiful, her eyes shone red and as Stacy focused on them he noticed tears falling from them. Despite the terror, he asked.\n“M’ lady.”\nM’lady? Why was he calling her M’ lady? Maybe it was because of her beauty.\n“Please tell me why are you crying?”\nThe monster did not reply. But instead bought a hand up. Raising it above her she bought it down.\n \nThe demon drifted through the wreckage of the village until she found the body of her now dead master. She lifted the fragile corpse into her arms, the boy's head drooped and the demon sobbed. A girl appeared behind her,\n“Why are you crying?”\n \nShe asked, her voice light like the snow that had once more begun to fall. The demon turned around.\n“Princess, what are you doing on earth?”\n \nThe demon asked.\n“It is so lonely down in hell.”\nThe princess replied.\n “And besides you need my help here. So I ask you again my dear friend, what is wrong?”\nThe demon looked down at the boy and a tear splashed onto his face.\n“He made a contract with me.”\nThe demon kept her eyes on the boy refusing to look at the girl standing in front of her or the carnage that she had created.\n “His adopted brother and he had been rejected and bullied by the village people and he wanted to avenge them. I have no idea how he learned to summon a demon but as I got to know him better I realised that he did not deserve the treatment he received and I just wanted to look after him. But I had to consume his soul. I had no other choice…”\n \nThe demon stopped talking, unable to speak and just able to sob. The girl looked down at the little boy cradled in the demon’s arms and smiled. She walked over to the two bending down and whispered something into the little boy’s ear and then kissed him on the forehead. The demon looked up at the girl and she smiled. The boy in the demon’s arms remained still. The demon looked up at the girl and fear shone on her face.\n“What have you done?”\nThe demon sobbed. The girl smiled,\n“Just wait.”\nShe whispered, as though she was afraid to wake to the boy. The demon looked down at the boy and gasped, the boy’s chest was gently rising and falling. The demon looked up at the little girl in awe. The girl tilted her head and laughed a bell like a laugh.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nChapter 1\n \n \nCeils heels crunched against the gravel pathway. The roses passing him by their thorns sharp, a deep green. Finny ran up the guardian path.\n“Master, Master!”\nhe yelled. Ceil stopped turning on his heels. Finny reached Ceil panting and out of breath. He opened his mouth to speak, but Ceil held up a hand and Finny shut his mouth. As soon as his breathing had returned to normal he said.\n“There is a man at the door. He says that he needs to talk to you. Urgently.”\nCeil sighed. Of course, as soon as he gets a break the Queen had another job for him. Why couldn’t he just enjoy one day to himself? That was the price to pay for the job that came with enormous wealth. It is not easy to be the Queen’s guard dog. Ceil began to walk back to the house slowly, skipping stones across the gravel pathway. As he approached his house he immediately knew that something wasn’t right. This man standing at the door was not alone. Turning to Finny he said,\n“Fetch Mayrin and Bardroy, this man is not alone.”\nFinny’s eyes widened and he nodded, running off in the opposite direction. The man at the door turned. He was wearing a dark red suit with a black shirt. His hair was light blond almost white and he had a long scar running from the top of his left eyebrow to his chin. Ceil smiled his cold smile. The man began to walk towards Ceil, his black shoes gaining no dirt on the gravel road. Ceils step never flattered. He was wrong this wasn’t one of the Queen’s informants, he did not bare any resemblance of a high court servant nor did he look much like a lord or anyone of high class status, but it was more than clear that this man was not poor. He was not a common man from the streets.\nCeils' smile grew. This day wasn’t going to be boring after all. The man reached Ceil and the two men stopped. The man stuck out his hand,\n“Good afternoon m’ lord.”\nThe man’s voice was deep and rough. He was clearly from the streets. He paused, expecting Ceil to reply. He was disappointed, Ceil remained silent, an expectant look on his face, detain hidden in plain sight in his eyes. The man cleared his throat and continued.\n“My name is Marcus Riviero.”\nHe held out his hand and Ceil took it. The two shook hands, Rivieros' face had the clear element of surprise at the strength of the boy’s grip.\n“Mr Riveiro,”\n Ceil said.\n “What brings you to Phantomhive manor?”\nMarcus Reviero looked around his surroundings, eyes lingering at the Forest. Ceil followed his gaze and saw something glint. Ceil smiled again. Riveiro relaxed his expression. He looked back at the young man in front of him. Staring him in the eye he said.\n “Well in all honesty Sir. I am here to kill you.”\nTo his surprise, the boy threw his head back and laughed.\n“Well, that was unexpected.”\nHe chuckled. Riveiro cocked his head confused.\n“You’re not scared?”\nHe asked. The boy looked at him. And Reveiros eyes widened. This kid didn't even look even remotely scared. In fact, it was the opposite. Murder shone in his eyes.\n“You knew that I was coming.”\nRevieros voice shook. Ceil slowly started to clap his hands. His smile never disappearing, even for an instance.\n“You are early Mr Reveiro.”\nHe said,\n “We weren’t expecting you until tomorrow.”\nReviero shook his head.\n“But, but.. How?”\nHe spluttered.\n“I police England’s underworld.”\nThe young boy’s eyes had become serious.\n “Every move that you make I know. Every place you have stolen from, every man \n you have beaten, every person you have killed for the right price.”\n Riveiro shook every man he had bought every single in his employee. No, he had bought every single man in his gang into a trap.\n“I must admit,”\nCeil continued.\n “We were not expecting you until tomorrow or the day after.”\nReveiros eyes lit up. Was there hope for them after all? Maybe the boy's reinforcements hadn’t arrived yet. Ceil saw the hope in the young leader’s eyes. How quaint. He thought. This man actually believed that he would win this fight. Reveiro played it cool.\n“Well then.”\n He said,\n “Since the cat is out of the bag.”\nHe turned towards the forest and yelled.\n“Out you come men. The boy knows we're here.”\nHe turned back to his opponent and to his surprise he found that the boy was no longer there. Revieros' eyes darted around, his head followed suit and soon he was turning full circles. Soon he found the boy standing at the top of his front door stairs smiling down at Reveiro.\n“What? But how?”\nReveiro spluttered. Next to him stood a tall lean man with pale skin and sleek black hair. He wore a black tailcoat with silver buttons. He had a white shirt underneath it and a purple necktie with a silver skull pin holding it in place. His gloved hands were clasped firmly at his side and a polite but deadly smile played on his face. Behind him, Finny appeared with a tall man (although not as tall as the black haired man) with blond hair in a chef's uniform. Reviero gulped. Why did one man give him such a bad feeling? By this time, nearly all of Revieros men had made their way from the forest. Reviero turned to the young lord.\n“I have my army.”\n He yelled up at him.\n “Now show me yours.”\nCeil laughed, a cruel, cold laugh, it was a laugh that a boy of his age should not have possessed.\n“But my dear Mr Reviero.”\nThe boy sighed.\n “You have already seen most of my army.”\nRivero’s head was now not the only thing shaking. This wasn’t possible. There was no way that this boy could possibly think that he could take down a whole army with only three servants. He had over sixty men that the boy could see and another thirty still hiding in the bushes just in case. No. He thought I must not despair, the boy is probably just playing a bluff.\n“I am sure that you are scared.”\nHe yelled up to Ceil.\n “But fear not, I will make sure that your death is quick and painless.”\nCeil did not reply. Instead, he motioned for his butler to bend down. He whispered in the man's ears and the butler nodded, straightening himself he signaled to the left hand side of the flat part of the rooftop and the gunfire exploded. Bullets rained down upon the men, throwing them to the ground like rag dolls. Reviero looked up and to his shock he saw that there was only one sniper. A girl whose red hair and maids uniform was being blown by the wind.\n“Impossible”\nHe whispered. A scream came from behind him. Men started shouting and more filled out of the woods. He spun around just as… The trees caught fire and exploded. \n ",
