It’s my wedding for god sake Amanda.” I started walking down the stairs with my dress “relax mom, they can’t start without you anyway, you’re the bride, you’re the main attraction for this.” Mom just looked at me like I was stupid and walked out of the door shaking her head mumbling “I'm leaving now with or without you.” I ran out the door trying not to drop my stuff on the way. About an hour later we arrived at the chapel where everyone was getting ready, mom and I walked towards her room and I started working on her hair and makeup. Once I finished with mom she started getting dressed and my best friend Mia started working on me, once she was done we both took our place next to the groomsmen we have to walk down the aisle, I was walking with Steve’s nephew Reid and Mia was walking down with his other nephew mark. We got to the end of the aisle and stood in our spots as we waited for my mom to walk down in her beautiful pearl white princess styled dress, after a while everyone stood as you heard the music coming through the speakers ‘bum ba budum bum ba budum…’\n“You may now kiss the bride.” Steve pulled mom closer before the minister could finish what he was saying. As mom and Steve kissed every jumped up and cheered for both of them, shortly after we begin heading to the reception. Once we got there Mia and I headed to the open bar and ordered a drink, once we got them Mia looked my way and smiled “Thank god for them having the wedding in the Bahamas where we can drink and have fun to.” I took my shot down and nodded as I said, “Amen to that.” After dancing for about an hour or so we begin giving toast and speeches about the wedding, and mom being the emotional person she is, cried during most of the speeches. After me and Mia’s toast she got up to hug us while bailing her eyes out. She grabbed my face and looked at me “I couldn’t ask for a better daughter mija, and you Mia-” she looked at Mia, “you are the extra child I wish I could’ve had myself, you will always be considered family baby girl.” We continued hugging, all of us crying now. I cut the hug off by laughing and saying, “Okay they didn’t come to see us hugs guys.” Everybody laughed and we continued getting drunk and dancing, at some point in the night I was pretty drunk, and Steve asked me for a dance in which I replied yes. As we were dancing he whispered something in my ear, I slightly pushed him off and stepped back too fast almost falling, the people near us asked if I was okay, I replied “yeah, just need some fresh air.” I walked out of the building quietly telling myself that I'm drunk and I heard him wrong, that he didn’t whisper in my ear “it’s you I want, and it’s you I’ll have.” I shook my head walking down the beach, that’s wrong Amanda, you’re drunk and misheard him.\nMy alarm went off waking me up for school, I slowly got up still exhausted, since I didn’t really sleep again last night. After getting ready I walked downstairs to be greeted by Steve “hey Amanda” I waved and he started staring at me so I asked what, “have you still not been sleeping well? You have bags under your eyes and look absolutely tired, is there something wrong? Should we take you to the hospital?” I turned around to grab an apple as I replied “no I'm fine I just have to get some more melatonin today after school.” He nodded okay not looking like he believed me, I started walking towards the door and then stopped and looked back at Steve “oh happy 3 year anniversary with mom by the way, thanks for keeping her happy.” He chuckled “I wouldn’t have her any other way, now go before you’re late for school.”\nDuring my last period, I was sitting next to Mia like usual. We were just sitting there talking until our creative writing class started, “Mandi you look exhausted, are you still not sleeping?” Mia asked me as I laid my head on my desk, “no. I don’t know why but for the last 2 weeks if feels like someone is watching me while I'm sleeping, but when I turn my light on there’s nobody there. And I don’t want to tell mom or Steve because don’t want to worry them over nothing, you know?” Mia opened her mouth to reply but my phone started vibrating and mom started texting me like crazy:\n‘don’t trust him’\n‘okay honey?!’\n‘WHATEVER YOU DO DON’T BELIEVE A WORD HE SAYS, HE’S LYING’\n‘he didn’t mean anything he ever said or did, it was all a lie’\n‘trust who?’\n‘mom??’\n‘sorry wrong person sweetie, I was trying to text Janice about a character in the book we’re reading. Oh by the way Steve’s picking you up’\n‘oh okay mom, love you’\n‘love you too sweetie’\nMia looked at me, “well that was weird” I nodded agreeing with her, “should I be worried Mia??” she looked up at the sky and scrunched her face up like she was trying to solve the worlds hardest math problem “well I mean your mom said it was the wrong number and it wouldn’t be the first time she accidently texted you instead so I wouldn’t worry, if something was wrong she’d make sure to tell you directly, so just don’t worry, okay babes?” I nodded again, “yeah you’re right, thanks love” I blew her a kiss jokingly and she caught it and held it close to her heart as the bell rung signaling the start of class.\nOnce class ended Mia and I walked to our lockers to get what we needed for homework, as we closed our locker I asked if she was coming over but she said she had cheerleading practice, I hugged her goodbye and started walking outside. As I walked outside I saw Steve pulling up, once I got in he told me, the hospital just called him and mom was in the hospital in a coma, she got into a car accident coming home from work. He said that’s the only information they gave him. After about five minutes we were walking up to the front desk asking what room she was in, “she’s in room 2041” the nurse said. When we got there, we saw her in the bed with wires attached everywhere on her body and a tube in her throat that was helping her breathe. I walked up to her bed and started crying, I sat down in the chair next to it asking god to make sure she comes out of this okay. \nAfter spending the day at the hospital, I went home and fell asleep, hours later I woke up to Steve standing at the foot of my bed breathing heavily. I asked if he was okay, but he just started walking towards me and sat on my bed, he looked at the ground and then looked back up at me. “the hospital just called…mom didn’t make it.” He hugged me as I cried into his shirt, after a while of him holding me while I cried, I heard him say “I can finally have you to myself.” I pulled away and told him I needed to see Mia, so I was going over there. He nodded and left my room with an okay. I packed a bag and went to Mia’s house, once I got there she opened the door and I told her everything that happened. She started crying with me and we just held each other until we heard a knock on the door. When we opened it, we saw it was the neighborhood cop, officer Davis, he had his hat in his hand as he wore a solemn look on his face. “hey officer Davis, what’s wrong?” I asked walking closer to him. He sighed and informed us that my mom’s death is now being treated as a murder because nurses say they say Steve leave her room right before she coded, he then asked if I knew where he could be. They checked the house, but no one was there, and it had looked like Steve has never lived there a day in his life. As I shook my head no, not being able to speak because of the shook he told me it might be safer for us to go with him to the station. Once we got to the police station two FBI agents walked up to us, “listen. Steve is a very dangerous guy; his real name is Jack. He wanted for the kidnapping and murder of seven teenage girls.” And the fact that they had no idea where he was now made him that much more terrifying and dangerous. She stooped down to eye level, “you guys absolutely need to go into witness protection, and my guys will help you with that. You will stay there until we can find and apprehend jack and keep you girls safe.
