She hadn't a single idea of what had claimed the young life of her beloved Oliver, and neither had anyone else. They'd only found him in his bed one night — cold, lifeless and unnervingly pale.\n More than anything, Krimson was confused, pitifully and hopelessly befuddled as to why it had to be him. She mewled on and on and wondered how on earth one could live a full life at only 33 years old. Friends and family of her beau gathered round and did what they could to keep her together, all to no avail. His mother stood with the palm of her hand resting comfortably along her shoulder while his sister had an arm hooked around her waist, and his best friend of eight years waited with two of his brothers on standby to facilitate her grieving and help bear the burden of her trauma. \n While everyone else took turns mourning and drying Krimson's raw, glossy eyes, Oliver's brother Zachary stood secluded in the immediate distance. Though the youngest of the bunch, Zachary was the most suspecting of them all. He looked at Krimson and saw only crocodile tears and a carefully orchestrated ploy, a devious caricature of an emotional outburst in an attempt to harvest everyone's pity. It was all an act, and he was sure of that. Though there was hardly anything he could pin her to, Zachary hadn't a doubt in his mind that there was blood on Krimson's hands. That being said, he held his tongue, nonetheless.\n\n After the service came to an end, as everyone started towards their respective cars, Krimson cut across the grass and walked directly to him.\n \"I...I hate to ask this, but,\" she began with a hearty sniffle. \"Would it be too much trouble to crash with you for the next few nights?\" She felt so pitiful, almost as if she was groveling at his feet for his company. \"I just...I don't know if I trust myself enough to be alone right now.\"\n Despite his reservations, Zachary nodded and graciously agreed to take her in, the length of her stay to be determined at a later time. They walked side by side against the whipping winds to Zachary's muddy green '89 Chevy pickup and then drove ten miles back to his house in Lakewood. The ride home felt not only tense but seemingly volatile as well, and Krimson stayed staring through her window and watching beads of rain race down the glass, unable to shake the feeling Zachary's menacing eyes on the back of her neck. Though part of her was convinced she'd fell victim to her own paranoia yet again, she couldn't seem to escape the presence of an ominous glower and an overarching suspense.\n \"I didn't know you moved this far out,\" she told him, quickly cracking underneath the rigorous stillness. Even when she spoke, he wouldn't say anything, not until moments later.\n \"Yeah.\" Terse, Zachary refused to part his eyes from the road ahead. He'd made his suspicions visibly clear. All the while, Krimson scooted in her seat, watching him and waiting on him to say something more. He didn't, though, and she sat crawling in her own skin until they made it home around a half hour later.\n\n When they arrived, Zachary pulled in and parked alongside his girlfriend's tiny red Toyota, then snatched the key from the ignition and followed Krimson silently inside. \n Seeing Zachary's girlfriend, April, had always been a breath of fresh air, though. Even in the most troubling of times, she never failed to find a reason to smile — even now that she was seven months pregnant. This time, however, it happened to be the simple notion of Krimson stopping by. \n \"Hey there gorgeous,\" April greeted, reaching out and hugging her belly-first. She'd been endearingly envious of Krimson's flawless skin and her long, fiercely radiant brown hair for the longest. Though breathtaking in her own right, a petite 5'6\" with a lovable and voluminous dirty-blonde mane, Krimson had always been a goddess in her eyes. \n \"I never got a chance to tell you that the brownies you made us were delicious,\" Krimson sniffled, being sure all eyes were on her as she wiped the brim of her eye dry. \"Oliver and I ate them all in a day.\" Easing to the side, Krimson saw the way Zachary took off his jacket. He was aggressive, and she could hear the tiny frustrated grunts he'd let out with each little move and motion he made.\n \"Oh please, Zach usually cleans the whole pan in about an hour.\" April picked up on his discomfort as well, so she walked across the living room to where he was and tried to slide an arm behind his back and give him a quick and casual hug. \"Hey honey, you okay?\" Rigid still, he kept his back to her and promptly jerked away, actively avoiding contact at all cost and then snapped seconds later,\n \"Yeah, I'm fine.\"\n Everyone left it at that, and April took his shallow words at face value and proceeded to help Krimson get settled. She was kind enough to allow her the use of her car for the next few hours to stop by the house and retrieve some clothes for the week along with a few other necessities. Upon returning, Krimson brought with her a slim pink knapsack and Oliver's old coat — scratched, tattered and worn to all holy hell. It'd definitely seen better days, but it'd always been her favorite thing to wear whenever he wasn't around.\n\n Krimson stayed with them through the next two weeks and kept to herself, for the most part, aiding in errands when she could or sleeping when she wasn't at work. As the days went on, Zachary let his guard down and gave her the benefit of the doubt as his suspicions wavered somewhat. Although, his surmise resurfaced on the final night before she was set to depart. She hadn't been at all jovial, but her perpetual moping and the darkened storm cloud that chased her around seemed to disappear a tad too soon.\n\n Passing by her room, that night, Zachary stopped in and said,\n \"Leaving so soon?\" \n They exchanged a brief chortle as Krimson packed her belongings and prepared to leave the following morning. Meanwhile, April was in the other room tending to their toddler Ashton, 9 months old and just beginning to crawl. He'd been battling a fever for days, and it only seemed to be getting worse. Neither he nor April could imagine suffering through this twofold. \n \"Thank you guys again, for everything. I can't tell you how much it means to me. If there's anything I can do, just —\" Suddenly, Zachary cut her off and said,\n \"No, no. Please, don't worry about it. We were happy to have you.\" He feigned his benevolence just enough to reel her in and get a definite answer out of her, one way or the other. \"I still can't believe he's gone,\" he said to Krimson, his words a loaded gun aimed steadily at her temple. \n \"He always said it'd be him before me. I never wanted him to be right.\" Krimson started choking up, but her eyes somehow stayed dry, at least from what Zachary could see. \n \"You miss him, huh?\" he asked, seeing how far he could push her.\n \"I mean, yeah? What kind of question is that?\" She chuckled again. But this time, she was the only one. \"Of course I miss him. That was the love of my life, practically my husband.\" Oddly stern all of a sudden, Krimson continued to gather her things and shove them inside her bag, now with an added aggressiveness. \n \"Did they ever find out what it was that killed him?\" The more he thought about it, he realized she hadn't once mentioned Oliver in the time she'd been there. \n \"Wow, really?\" Just then, her spite peaked as her defensiveness spiked. \"Yeah, I found out didn't bother to tell the rest of his family. Better yet, I killed him, because that makes total sense.\" Her fiery wit proceeded her, but it was almost enough to deal with her ultimate doom. \"If you have something to say me, go ahead say it now, Zach.\" \n \"Whoa whoa whoa, let's pump the breaks for a minute,\" he pled, holding up both of his palms and gesturing for her to ease back. \n From the other room, two doors down, April heard a worrisome inflection in Krimson's voice and promptly rushed over to see what the commotion was.\n \"What's going on?\" asked April, coming around the corner and into the guest room. \"Is everything okay?\"\n \"No, your boyfriend seems to think I murdered my fiancé.\" Just then, April jerked her eyes to the left and stared daggers at him. \"I sincerely hope true love actually finds you one day, Zachary. Then, maybe you'll realize it's impossible to breathe without the one true love, let alone take their life with your bare hands. I may be a lot of things, but I am not a goddamned killer!\" \n\n Between April's hardened, disapproving eyes and Krimson's throat-slitting words, Zachary had no choice but to eat his words and immediately wallow in his own shame, especially when Krimson folded underneath the sudden silence and sprinted out of the room and into their bathroom.\n \"What is wrong with you?\" April hounded him further once Krimson fled the scene. \n \"I already told you, I don't trust her. She's hiding something.\" \n \"And how exactly do you know that, Mr. Private Eye?\" She kept on his case, even though she too had begun to wonder how Krimson seemed to remain so unfazed and borderline sanguine over the last few days, give or take. The two bickered back and forth for another short while before Krimson returned to the room, her face a feverish red and her eyes an ocean. \n \"I'll be back,\" she told them, mowing straight past Zachary and fetching Oliver's coat yet again. Before either of them had the chance to ask her where she was headed, Krimson followed up and said, \"Ashton's out of medicine.\" She'd had the time to notice in the fifteen minutes she'd spent stooped over the cluttered bathroom counter bawling her eyes out. \n \"Krimson, babe, it's almost 11 at night,\" she pleaded, stopping Krimson on her way out. \"Ash will be fine until tomorrow.\" \n Despite her efforts, Krimson insisted and continued out of the door and left April to scold Zachary further, returning in less than a half hour and bringing with her an 8oz bottle of cough and cold medicine along with a family sized box of chocolate chip cookies and a few other household goods. \n\n Meeting her by the doorway, April softly slid the bags from her fingers and sighed,\n \"Oh my god, you're an angel.\" Had she'd asked, April would've knelt to her knees and bowed at Krimson's feet, ever so grateful and forever in her favor as she proceeded to unload the bags and retire to the bedroom for the rest of the night. She fell asleep moments after her face sunk into the pillow, leaving Krimson to nurse little Ashton back to health whilst Zachary remained on the couch half-cocked with a beer in his hand while the glow of the television set lit the whites of his eyes. \n First things first, Krimson snatched the medicine from the counter and headed straight to the back room where Ashton was lying in his crib, already cooing and crying lightly even as she approached. She removed the packaging and the safety seal and poured a capful of medicine carefully into his mouth, being sure to softly tousle the silky hairs atop his teeny head and admire the glimmering sparkle in his sky blue eyes. It'd be the last time she ever saw them, pictures aside, and she wanted to enjoy the moment while it lasted. But then, she thought to herself, \n\n 'This isn't enough.'\n\n She followed her maternal instincts, but the small dry cough he let out sealed her premonition that he needed another dose. With that, Krimson gave him another capful, and then another, and then another. She wouldn't stop until about a half a bottle down, and she smiled to herself as he quieted and his eyelids began to gently flutter.\n Next was a bath before bed, a proper segue into a perfectly still and tranquil slumber. Stripping him from his onesie, she filled the tub about a quarter of the way with lukewarm and sat him inside, then kissed his scalp as she lathered and scrubbed his tiny body clean. He couldn't sit up on his own, but that was okay. He didn't need to, at least not with her there. \n Although, as she hovered above him, Krimson noticed the harsh smell of medicine still staining his breath. It was so unpleasant, especially for such a sweet and darling little boy — she just couldn't let that slide. In a swift fluid motion, she leaned him onto his back and set him underneath the faucet, then lathered a dollop of soap in the palm of her hands and spread it along the lower half of his face before she turned the water on and let it run over his mouth. A touch squirmy at first, he eventually settled and laid still along the current of the water while Krimson saw to it that he left the tub with an oh so lavish aroma of pomegranate and roses. \n\n With a crisp new pamper and a fresh clean onesie, kissed softly with a scent of lavender, dear little Ashton sat perfectly cradled in Krimson's loving, nurturing arms as she carried him back to his crib and set him inside. Not a peep, not a sound, and completely unmoving, he lied with his tiny limbs cutely sprawled about underneath his bright and colorful mobile as he slipped into an eternal slumber, and Krimson made sure to steal a final kiss from his round chubby cheek while his skin was still warm before she left the bedroom and pulled the door closed ever so faintly. \n From there, Krimson returned into the living room and walked over to where Zachary was sitting. He was still mesmerized by the television, fully immersed in yet another rerun of ESPN highlights. \n \"Hey,\" Krimson civilly began, catching his attention straight away. \"I'm sorry about whatever that was earlier,\" she went on, referring to the spat they'd had just over an hour ago. \"I'm just, I'm having a really hard time coping with the fact that I'll never wake up next to him again or see him smile.\" And again, Krimson's eyes welted as her extremities went weak, and Zachary stood and held her as she crumbled in his arms while the two tearfully made amends. \n\n After all was said and done, the two agreed that a semi-celebratory glass of wine or two to end the night was in order. Zachary went into the fridge to fetch a bottle of California merlot, then excused himself for a quick pee break while Krimson found a corkscrew and washed out two glasses. Although, even after both glasses were pristine and spotless, she reached over and grabbed four or five paper towels from the roll, then stuffed them down the drain and let the sink continue to fill, keeping the corkscrew gripped tightly in her hand all the while. As expected, he returned in record time and noticed that the sink was full before Krimson said anything.\n\n \"I think it's clogged,\" she told him, stepping to the side as he walked in. Leaning forward, he narrowed his eyes and took a closer look, and Krimson took what little leeway she had to catch him off guard and drive the point of the corkscrew inches below his Adam's apple, twisting and burrowing the screw as deep as she could manage. Stunned, he gasped for precious air as blood gushed and spurted from the gaping hole in his neck. Krimson then turned the faucet on again and retrieved the paper towels and held him in place above the sink, scolding hot water rushing from the faucet as blood poured from his throat and swirled hastily down the drain. \n\n Once she'd bled him dry, his face now pale and drained of any hint of color, Krimson briefly rinsed his wound and dried him off before she lugged his lifeless body downstairs and loaded him into the bed of his pickup. She found a pair of his old work boots in the bed as well as a torn and tattered steering wheel cover, and she slipped into his boots — even though they were a good three sizes too big — and put the sleeve on the wheel before she fished his keys from his pocket and took off.\n Krimson drove for about two hours along the coast, give or take, breathing in tranquility and basking in the glow of the starlight as the trees passed by in the rear view mirror. She shortly pulled off to the shoulder of the road with her hazards on and put the hood up, then pulled him from the bed and carried him through a short stretch of woods down a small path to a murky riverbank where a large industrial wood chipper awaited. \n Out of breath and drenched in sweat, she powered the machine on and fed Zachary's body feet-first into the chipper. She couldn't help but wince at the sound of bones cracking and crushing on top of the already atrocious spastic buzzes and grinding noises, but still, Krimson was somehow entranced by the way his flesh and innards sprayed from the mouth of the chipper and dissolved into the bottom of the riverbed. Once she was finished, Krimson unearthed a nail filer from a small clutch of dirt and grass and scraped away at the paint of the chipper's power, then buried it once again before she slogged back to the truck and drove home. \n\n She made it home around six that morning and left his boots in the back where she found them along with the steering wheel cover, leaving a good three hours to spare before April awoke. First, she took the opportunity to clean both the kitchen and the bathroom, leaving both floors clean enough to eat off of them. Then, cycling back into the kitchen, she dismantled the coffee maker and cleaned it piece by piece, then put it back together. \n Still, though, it wasn't clean enough, so she poured about a half gallon of bleach into the machine along with about a quarter of a can of ant spray she'd gotten from under the sink and let it soak for another hour. Once it had a chance to stew, Krimson filtered the concoction through and poured out the contents of the pot, leaving just enough of it to coat the bottom. Again, she was met with a stench so pungent and unlawfully harsh, and she saw it fit to bathe the inside of the glass pot in vanilla extract as well as leave some at the base of the filter and the reservoir as well before she brewed a fresh pot for the morning. \n\n April emerged from the bedroom just before nine, smiling oh so tenderly as she passed by Ashton's room and peeked inside at his crib.\n \"Wow, he actually slept through the night,\" she told Krimson as she took a seat at the table, bringing her baby pink robe closed with both hands. \"You're a goddamned wizard.\" She continued to praise her, and Krimson smirked as she offered her a cup of joe to start the day, also being sure to note that she saw a small trail of ants and took it upon herself to spray the counters. \"And you made coffee?!\" April continued to rant and rave. \"Man, are you sure you have to leave?\" Halfway facetious as she petitioned for Krimson to stay just a little longer, she waited graciously as Krimson served her coffee to her in her favorite handcrafted ceramic mug, pumpkin-colored and decorated with hand-drawn pastel roses. \n \"Is that sweet enough?\" Krimson had only sprinkled in two packets of sugar and a slosh of creamer. \n \"It's a little strong, but that's okay.\" April's tongue was singed with a special bitterness, and she immediately leaped from her chair to fetch another five packets of sugar. \"Zach likes his straight black, and I just don't know how he does it.\" Once she'd doused the offensively bitter taste as best she could, April fought against oncoming abdominal pains as stomached the rest of her coffee.\n \"Are you okay?\" asked Krimson, concerned as she turned and saw April doubled over with her hands tucked beneath her stomach. \n \"Whew, yeah,\" April replied, seeing a brief reprieve. \"I don't think Leah likes coffee...\" Her and Zachary had handpicked the name ages ago, and it had stuck the instant the doctor told them they'd soon be having a baby girl. \n\n But then, her writhing pains came back amplified times ten. She tried to fight it off, but it felt as though April had swallowed a thousand blades, the lining in her stomach burning and tearing to shreds as she bellowed out and groaned in agony. However, this time, Krimson wore a straight face and kept her back turned for the moment. \n \"You know, Zachary and I had our differences, but I'm really going to miss him. A lot. I'm going to miss all of you. You guys were always so nice to me.\"\n \"Wait, what?\" Perplexed by Krimson's dooming diction, April seemed to forget her catastrophic pains for a brief moment in time. \"What do you mean?\" While she struggled to her feet, Krimson continued,\n \"Oh, and don't even get me started on little Ashton! Talk about the cutest little guy anyone ever saw.\"\n \"Krimson,\" April tried to interject, but Krimson kept on.\n \"You know, I'm sad. I'm really sad, actually. I was looking forward to hearing his first words, or being there to watch him take his first steps. I couldn't wait for it.\"\n \"Krimson!\"\n \"It's such a shame.\"\n\n Panicked, April yelled her name once more as she collapsed to the ground yet again. Krimson's face was fit with an almost perky grin, completely unbothered as April tumbled to the tile hacking up a lung. It was only when April started screaming bloody murder and coughing up puddles of blood that Krimson's distress returned, and she reached into her back pocket to pull her phone out. April presumed she was dialing 911, but to her dismay, she quickly realized that Krimson was calling a cab.\n\n \"Krimson, wait!\" April shrieked from the floor, her heart pounding as Krimson arranged her ride and nonchalantly slid her phone back inside her pocket. \"Please!\" \n Kneeling down to the ground, Krimson noticed teardrops falling from both her eyes, and she laid a gentle kiss on the side of her head and cautiously stroked her hair as she docilely told her,\n \"Thank you guys again, for everything. I love you all with all of my heart. I'm so sorry that it had to be this way.\" Just then, April began weeping vehemently under her breath and begging Krimson to spare her. \n\n But alas, April's gut-wrenching cries fell on deaf ears as Krimson stood again without hesitation and started towards the door. \n \"W-wait, wait!\" she cried, hysterical as she counted down the final moments of her life. \"Please, tell Ashton that Mommy loves him...\" She was dying, that much was clear. April only hoped that Krimson would show even a single ounce of mercy and heed her one last wish. \n Taken with an oh so kindred spirit, Krimson turned to face her and said,\n \"Oh don't worry, you'll see him soon.\" \n\n With that, Krimson gathered her things from the other room and proceeded out of the house, locking the door with Zachary's keys. April, meanwhile, bucked her eyes wide as she sprang from the ground and used the last little bit of vigor she had to race to Ashton's room, only to breathe her final breaths as she fell and succumbed to a tragic fate mere steps away from where her baby boy rested so peacefully.",
