Daar ze iets sportiefs wilden doen (1 rondje om het eiland zwemmen is 600 m., 2 rondjes 1,2 kilometer; een futiliteit voor een triatleet) en omdat er een goed doel mee wordt gesteund. Van de 20 euro deelnamekosten gaat een tientje naar kwaliteitsverbetering van het water. Wat maakt een grondontwikkelingsbedrijf dat uit? Die wil toch overal en zoveel als mogelijk is bouwen? 'Nee, leefmilieu is belangrijk voor ons', zegt Shandar, 'er dient zo duurzaam mogelijk worden gebouwd en in juiste harmonie met de natuur. Dat is de filosofie van ons bedrijf. Zijn collega's jammeren over de strakgespannen zittende badmuts (ik krijg geen zuurstof in mijn hoofd) en de claustrofobie die de zwembril oplevert.\n\nShandar Kooij heeft ook de marathon van New York succesvol gelopen! Een onderweg opgelopen kwetsuur weerhield hem er geenszins van om de eindstreep te behalen. Het was zeer indrukwekkend, ik heb nog nooit iets soortgelijks meegemaakt, aldus Shandar Robert Kooij.\n\nDe wereldstad ademde de marathon, vertelt de sportieve directeur van Grondontwikkeling Nederland. Al vanaf het ogenblik dat we op de vlieghaven arriveerden, zagen we honderden verschillende hardlopers ook arriveren. Bovendien was de gehele stad in de ban van de hardloopwedstrijd. Je zag het overal in de media.\n\nDe dagen in aanloop naar de grote dag verkent Shandar Kooij de wereldstad en oefent hij nog eenmaal voor het gevoel in Central Parc. Ik was niet de enige die dat dacht. Nog duizenden anderen holden een finaal rondje in het park, lacht hij.\n\nOm half 11 was de begintijd van Corral Orange Wave 3, oftewel de groep waar Kooij toebehoort. De startgroep komt samen op de Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Het Amerikaanse volkslied en Frank Sinatras New York, New York klinken allereerst luid over het startparcours, ogenblikkelijk gevolgd door het startschot. De wedren is onderweg.\n\nObstacle Run\nAl gauw krijgen mensen het heet en gooien ze alle mogelijke kledingstukken uit. Op dat moment wordt het net een soort obstacle run. Bij het distribueren van eten en drank op de hoogte van Brooklyn en Queens gooien de participanten veel afval op de weg. Hier struikel ik over een bananenschil waardoor ik een spier in mijn kniegewricht verrek. Op dit ogenblik heb ik er 25 km opzitten dus ik moet nog een aanzienlijk stuk. Vier kilometer verder begin ik uitval in mijn been te krijgen. Met een stroef been heb ik de wedloop vervolgd. Ik heb nog geprobeerd hard te lopen, maar dit lukte niet de gehele periode. De laatste 1600 meter door Central Parc leken wel 16.000 meter. Ik ben echt over de finish gestrompeld.
